Snowfall warnings issued for Coquihalla and Hwy 3

Lots of snow is expected to fall along two BC Interior highways today.

Environment Canada is predicting the following:

  • Coquihalla Highway (Hope to Merritt): 15 centimetres

  • Hwy 3 (Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass): Up to 40 cm

A snowfall warning has been issued for both highways.

Earlier warnings for Hwy 1 between Rogers Pass and Eagle Pass, as well as the Okanagan Connector, have been rescinded.

“Another fall storm is expected to impact southern BC beginning today,” Environment Canada explained in a public bulletin warning about Hwy 3.

“The system is forecast to remain offshore over the next few days, with associated bands of precipitation pushing into the region from the south, bringing 30 to 40 cm of snow into the region.”

“The heaviest snowfall, which is expected to meet warning criteria, is expected today; snowfall is likely to continue until early Sunday afternoon when it will taper to a few flurries.”

For the Coquihalla, the department added: "Additionally, gusty easterly winds may create periodic blowing snow which will further reduce visibilities."
