UPDATE: Wildfire at Sooke Potholes now 80 hectares, still burning out of control

(Update: July 24, 2024 @ 3 pm) The wildfire at Sooke Potholes is now estimated to be 80 hectares in size.

BCWS continues to respond with four initial attack crews along with a 10-person Capital Regional District Parks fire crew, air support and response officers.

The public should be aware that smoke may be highly visible in the area.

Boaters on Shawnigan lake may see water scooping aircraft filling. All boaters are required to dock immediately if aircraft are operating on the lake.

(Original story: July 24, 2024 @ 10:15 am) The Old Man Lake wildfire burning in Sooke Potholes Regional Park on Vancouver Island is still estimated at 50 hectares as of the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) update this morning.

Suspected to be human caused, the fire is still classified as out of control.

The BCWS has issued a reminder for people to stay clear of water skimming aircraft on Shawnigan Lake.

“In the interest of crew and public safety, the public is urged to keep well away from areas where airtankers or helicopters are operating,” said BCWS.

All boaters are required to dock immediately if aircraft are operating. Any obstruction to approach, filling and departures will cause the mission to be aborted.

The BCWS also added that people using other watercraft in the flightpath “present a serious safety risk to our staff and can interfere with our ability to fight wildfires.”

Smoke from the blaze is affecting air quality today. The Province is forecasting a level five, or moderate risk, for the West Shore.

That means that the “at risk population” should consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous activities outdoors. The general population does not need to adjust outdoor activities unless you experience symptoms such as coughing.
