Calcite Creek wildfire now held, evacuation alerts lifted

A large wildfire burning in the Similkameen region is now considered as being held.

That means the 6,684-hectare Calcite Creek wildfire is expected "to remain within the current perimeter, control line or boundary."

Additionally, an evacuation alert for the Eastgate area has been lifted.

However, late Monday evening, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen said the evacuation order for the Pasayten Area in Electoral Area “H” remains in effect.

Cooler weather and increased humidity levels caused reduced wildfire activity, the BCWS says.

“Entering back into a cooler and wetter period this week with the possibility of precipitation as another low approaches towards the middle of the week,” an online update explains.

“Structure protection personnel have begun demobbing structure protection equipment.”

Crews are directly attacking any remaining hot spots, which have been identified through scans.

Aircraft is also in the area helping bucket water onto those hotspots.

On Tuesday, there were 94 firefighters, 10 structure protection personnel, eight helicopters and airtankers and three pieces of equipment working on the fire.
