'Unseasonably' cool weather sees Kelowna break a 118-year-old temperature record

An “unseasonably” cool air mass brought mild weather to much of the Southern Interior this weekend, including the Thompson Okanagan.

According to Environment Canada, a handful of new daily maximum temperature records were set on Sunday.

But they weren’t for hotter temperatures, that cool air mass saw new “low daily maximum temperatures” recorded in nine BC communities.

For June 16, Kamloops topped out at 15.1ºC, beating out a record of 15.4ºC set in 1991.

Kelowna beat a record set 118 years ago with a new daily high of 13.3ºC. The previous mark was 15ºC.

Lytton saw a daily high of 15.6ºC set in 2014, but the new low mark for a daily maximum temperature was 15.2ºC on Sunday.

Merritt’s new daily maximum temperature record for June 16 was 11.5ºC beating the previous record of 13ºC, which was also recorded in 2014.

Nakusp tied with a daily maximum of 14.5ºC recorded in 1978.

Penticton saw 14.9ºC, beating the previous daily maximum temperature of 15.6ºC recorded in 1939.

Princeton narrowly beat its record of 12.2ºC set in 1939 by a fraction of a degree with a daily high of 12.1ºC.

Sparwood also narrowly beat a record of 10ºC set in 2010 with a daily high of 9.9ºC on Sunday.

Summerland saw the biggest difference between records with a 2.2ºC change from a previous record set in 1987.

The small Okanagan town saw a high of 13.3ºC, beating out the previous record of 15.5ºC.

Only two BC towns set new daily minimum temperatures this weekend.

Bella Bella saw a new daily low of 3.9ºC, narrowly beating the record of 4ºC set 10 years ago.

Finally, Trail saw a new daily low of 4ºC recorded on June 16. That beats out a record of 4.4ºC seen in 1954.
