UPDATE: Police confirm Hwy 97 crash near Peachland was fatal

(UPDATE: May 10 @ 10:15 am) - A crash that shut down Hwy 97 near Peachland for several hours on Thursday was fatal.

The RCMP confirmed this morning that one person was killed in the crash just south of the community near Brent Road.

"This is an active investigation and details of the individual’s personal information like name, gender and age, nor any other information, will be released at this time to provide some privacy to the family," said an RCMP release.

The RCMP extended condolences to the victim's family.


(UPDATE: May 9 @ 6:05 pm) – The incident on Hwy 97 is now cleared.

DriveBC said the highway reopened at Brent Road shortly before 6 pm.

The RCMP have yet to provide an update on the crash but NowMedia staff will provide an update once those details are released.


(UPDATE: May 9 @ 5:25 pm) – DriveBC says HIghway 97 south of Peachland is set to reopen around 6 pm.

The highway closed in both directions Thursday afternoon due to a “serious crash.”

DriveBC provided the latest update shortly before 5:15 pm.

An assessment is still in progress, however, and no update has been provided from the RCMP.


(UPDATE: May 9 @ 3 pm) - Hwy 97 remains shut down in both directions just south of Peachland.

Emergency crews remain at the scene of what the RCMP called a "serious" crash earlier this afternoon.

While DriveBC says there is "no word yet" on when the highway will reopen, a detour has been made available via the 201 Forest Service Road.


(Original story: May 9 @ 1:45 pm) - A crash has shut down Hwy 97 near Peachland.

According to DriveBC, the highway is closed in both directions at Brent Road, just south of the community.

The West Kelowna says it has officers at the scene of the "serious motor vehicle collision."

No detour is available and it's uncertain at this time when the highway will reopen.

"Officers will reopen the highway as soon as the scene is processed entirely," said Cpl. Michael Gauthier.
