Play kitchen recalled after child dies from 'strangulation and asphyxia'

A children’s play kitchen has been recalled in Canada after the tragic death of a young boy in the US.

The KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchen was sold in Canada between January 2018 and July 2025.

Health Canada, which highlighted the recall in a bulletin published on Thursday, said about 5,800 of the products were sold in Canada during that time. In the US, more than 192,000 were sold.

According to Health Canada, the manufacturer was recently told that a child’s clothing got caught on one of the product’s metal hooks while he was climbing through one of its openings.

“The child was unable to rescue himself and died from strangulation and asphyxia,” Health Canada explained. “The unit involved was not securely fastened to the wall creating a gap between the unit and the wall where a child was able to climb and have their clothes entangled with the hooks.”

There have been no reports of injuries involving the toy in Canada.

Anyone in possession of the product should immediately stop using it, however, and contact Backyard Kids for “replacement hooks.”
